As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections, the Rule of Law and Empowerment Initiative, also known as Partners West Africa Nigeria (PWAN), is set to host a webinar addressing the persistent challenges hindering women’s political participation. The event, titled “Accelerating Action for Women’s Inclusion in Governance in Nigeria,” will take place on March 7, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM (West African Time).
The webinar is coming just as the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions recommended a six-month suspension for Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central. The 45-year-old lawmaker is said to have disrespected Senate authority after she alleged that the Senate President Godswill Akpabio sexually harassed her and put a formal petition against him.
Despite efforts to promote gender equality in governance, recent assessments by PWAN highlight a decline in women’s political inclusion, with only 10.2% of contestants in the 2023 elections being female. The webinar will bring together key stakeholders to analyse legal, economic, religious, cultural, and structural barriers preventing women from fully participating in politics.
The discussion aims to identify solutions, drive gender inclusion, and propose actionable steps to improve women’s representation in the 2027 elections. Participants will explore strategies to address gender inequality in political leadership and enhance collaboration between civil society organisations, policymakers, and advocates for women’s empowerment.
PWAN, a women-led non-governmental organization, focuses on citizens’ participation, security governance, and strengthening civil society across Nigeria and West Africa. Through this webinar, the organization hopes to foster dialogue and concrete action toward gender equality in politics.
