Celebrating the 2Baba Legend
Makurdi, the vibrant capital of Benue State, is set to come alive this December as the grand finale of the 2Baba Song Contest takes centre stage. Organised by the Afri Theatre Troupe and the Benue Artistes Support Foundation, in collaboration with the iconic Tuface Idibia aka 2Baba himself, this event promises a celebration of talent, culture, and the indomitable spirit of Benue’s up-and-coming artists.
Unveiling the Contest
In an exclusive chat with AkweyaTV, the Afri Theatre CEO, Mr Abakpa Itodo popularly known as Kpoku Plc, said the grand finale will only be a culmination of a long engagement.
“The journey began on the 17th and 18th of September, 2023, with the first round of the 2Baba Song Contest,” Mr. Itodo, who is a renowned broadcaster and entertainer, said. “Intending participants showcased their vocal prowess through acapella renditions of 2Baba’s hit songs. The subsequent audition process saw 12 outstanding contestants selected to vie for the top spots at the grand finale.”
The judges tasked with the challenging role of evaluating performances will use criteria ranging from delivery and stage act to audience response, composure, costumes, voice, and overall performance. This ensures a fair and comprehensive assessment of the contestants’ musical abilities and stage presence.
Prizes and Privileges
The stakes are high, with winners not only earning cash rewards but also gaining the prestigious opportunity to collaborate with 2Baba himself.
In Kpoku PLC’s words, “Winners of the contest will be given the privilege to do collaborations with 2Baba, win studio sections and other incentives and privileges. There will also be a massive concert with renowned Nigerian musicians, comedians, DJs, MCs and theatre troupes performing live. 2Baba will be live at the venue to watch the contestants perform live, do a performance and present awards and gifts to deserving contestants. Studio sessions and other incentives await the triumphant contestants, paving the way for their ascent in the competitive music industry.”
2Baba’s Supportive Role
Beyond being the inspiration for the contest, the 48-year-old 2Baba has played a crucial role in its organisation. The multiple award winner will grace the grand finale as one of the judges, presenting awards to deserving contestants, offering words of encouragement, and even treating the audience to a live performance.
The grand finale, spanning from December 26th to 27th, promises more than just a music competition. It’s a cultural extravaganza that aims to bring unbridled joy and pride to the people, celebrating not only 2Baba but also the rich cultural heritage of Benue State.
As the countdown to the grand finale begins, the organisers have embarked on a massive online publicity campaign. Utilising various platforms, they aim to create a buzz that transcends geographical boundaries, ensuring that the event receives the attention it deserves and attracting a diverse audience.
