Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) has appointed Professor Adamu Ahmed as its new Vice-Chancellor.

Professor Ahmed, an Urban and Regional Planning lecturer at ABU Zaria, will succeed Professor Kabir Bala following a decision announced at the 209th Special Council meeting chaired by Mahmud Yayale Ahmed. The appointment has garnered support from university stakeholders, who praise Ahmed’s academic and administrator experience.
He previously served as Director of the Directorate of University Advancement and currently holds the position of Pro-Chancellor at the Federal University of Education, Kano.
Meanwhile, in a significant shake-up at the University of Abuja, President Tinubu has dismissed Vice-Chancellor Aisha Maikudi and dissolved the institution’s Governing Council. The decision follows controversy surrounding Maikudi’s selection process in December, where some board members alleged improper influence in her appointment.

In response, Tinubu has appointed Lanre Tejuoso as the new Pro-Chancellor and Professor Patricia Manko as acting Vice-Chancellor for a six-month term. The presidential statement, released by Special Adviser Bayo Onanuga, specified that Manko will not be eligible to apply for the permanent position.
The statement noted that these changes reflect the president’s commitment to revitalising Nigeria’s higher education system through dynamic leadership and accountability, adding that the restructuring aims to strengthen governance and academic excellence within the country’s tertiary education sector.
