The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Nigeria and the Women Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture (WCCIMA) have unveiled a transformative programme to equip 100 women-led businesses with critical skills for continental trade.
The HerAfCFTA Forum, held in Abuja on Wednesday, brought together key stakeholders to address the unique challenges faced by women-led micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in leveraging the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) opportunities.
Addressing persistent barriers that have historically limited women’s participation in cross-border trade, the initiative provided comprehensive support through targeted interventions. Participants received intensive training on export protocols, market intelligence, and strategic networking opportunities.
“This collaboration with UNDP marks a pivotal moment in unlocking the full potential of women-led MSMEs in Nigeria. We are proud to be part of an initiative that not only builds capacity but also opens new avenues for women entrepreneurs to thrive in continental trade, driving economic growth and creating lasting change,” said Ms. Weyinmi Eribo, Director-General of WCCIMA.
She stated that the programme goes beyond capacity-building to create tangible pathways for women entrepreneurs to expand their businesses across the continent.
UNDP’s Senior Economist, Mr. Tony Muhumuza, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the organisation’s commitment to fostering economic empowerment. “We are laying the foundation for greater participation in regional markets,” he stated, expressing optimism about the initiative’s long-term impact.
The forum’s comprehensive approach included specialised masterclasses, market intelligence reporting, business-to-business (B2B) matchmaking, and practical trade facilitation support. These interventions aim to address critical challenges such as export readiness, branding strategies, and market access.
Of particular significance is the programme’s focus on high-demand sectors, providing women entrepreneurs with the tools to navigate the complex landscape of continental trade. By addressing logistical and skill-based barriers, the initiative promises to unlock new economic opportunities for Nigerian women.
As part of the broader HerAfCFTA initiative, UNDP and WCCIMA are committed to continuing their support for women entrepreneurs, with the ultimate goal of strengthening Nigeria’s role in continental economic integration.
