The four-day tour, which covered all three senatorial districts, revealed widespread cases of prolonged detention without trial and inmates serving beyond their prescribed sentences. More than half of those released—62 individuals—were freed on medical grounds, while others benefited from compassionate release due to prosecutorial delays.

The Uyo custodial centre saw the largest number of releases, with 73 inmates freed, followed by Ikot Ekpene (29), Eket (17), and Ikot Abasi (4). Among the notable cases was 20-year-old Etieno Okon, who had spent five years in detention without trial for alleged cultism charges, having been arrested at age 15.

Justice Obot expressed concern over the high number of inmates awaiting trial, some of whom have no formal charges filed against them. She criticised the prolonged detention periods, noting that many detainees had already served time equivalent to or exceeding potential sentences for their alleged crimes.

“Most of these offenders committed minor offences and have overstayed beyond their expected sentences,” the Chief Judge observed, calling on prosecutors to ensure swift justice and protect defendants’ fundamental rights.

The prison tour exposed significant infrastructure challenges within the state’s correctional system. Frank Okonkwo, Controller of the Correctional Centre for Akwa Ibom Command, highlighted issues including deteriorating facilities and inadequate transportation for court appearances.

Okonkwo appealed to Governor Umo Eno for increased state support to improve inmate welfare and facility conditions. He thanked Justice Obot for her intervention and commitment to addressing systemic issues within the correctional system.

The Chief Judge commended judicial staff and correctional officers for their dedication during the exercise while urging released inmates to maintain good conduct and avoid activities that could lead to re-imprisonment.
