The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has intensified efforts on the Police Safe School Initiative with visits to schools across the state on Tuesday.

During his outreach on March 12, 2025, CP Orutugu also commended the residents of Anambra for the increasing resumption of social and economic activities on Mondays, which had previously been affected by illegal sit-at-home orders.

“The police and other security agencies have taken over the streets, especially on Mondays, to sustain safety in the state,” said CP Orutugu, highlighting how the illegal orders had previously disrupted academic activities in the region.

The Commissioner was accompanied by the State’s Commissioner for Women Affairs, Hon. Ify Obinabo, during his school visits. Together, they encouraged citizens to “go about their various businesses without fear of molestation.”

The Police Safe School Initiative is a comprehensive approach to security in educational institutions, focusing on three key areas. First, it aims to identify and prevent potential security threats in schools. Second, it promotes collaboration among school administrators, parents, and local communities to enhance safety measures. Finally, it provides support and resources to help schools improve their security protocols.

According to the Anambra State Police Command, the initiative is expected to yield several benefits, including improved safety for students and staff, reduced incidents of crime and violence within school environments, increased confidence among educational stakeholders, and the creation of more conducive learning environments.

The programme comes as part of broader efforts to restore normalcy in the Southeast region, which has experienced periodic disruptions due to sit-at-home orders issued by various groups in recent years.

The announcement was made public by SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Anambra State Police Command in Awka.

Local education authorities have welcomed the initiative, seeing it as a positive step toward ensuring uninterrupted learning for students who have faced irregular school schedules due to security concerns.
