The initiative, which took place on June 12, 2025, saw police officers and community members marching together through strategic locations in Nnewi and surrounding areas to promote peace and security awareness. The walk represents part of the command’s broader strategy to strengthen community policing through the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) platform.
Participants in the safety walk covered key areas, including the Area Command in Nnewi, Nkwo Triangle, Nwafor Orizu Roundabout, First Bank Junction, and Nnobi Junction. The route selection was designed to maximise visibility and community engagement in high-traffic commercial and residential zones.
According to the state police command, the demonstration aimed to highlight the critical importance of police-community collaboration in maintaining peace and security. The walk also served as a public awareness campaign about the devastating impact of violent crimes on communities and the need to foster a culture of non-violence.
The Police Public Relations Officer for Anambra State Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, noted that such initiatives help build trust between law enforcement and residents while encouraging greater community participation in security matters.
The safety walk initiative forms part of the command’s ongoing efforts to leverage community support in combating crime, particularly kidnapping, which has become a significant security concern in various parts of the country. By engaging directly with residents through visible community activities, police hope to strengthen intelligence gathering and encourage public cooperation in crime prevention.

The timing of the walk to coincide with Democracy Day underscores the connection between democratic governance and community safety, with police highlighting how citizen participation in security matters strengthens democratic institutions.
Officials indicated that the community engagement approach is expected to contribute to creating a safer environment throughout Anambra State by building stronger relationships between law enforcement agencies and the communities they serve.
