The lawmakers rejected the nominations of Dr. Yangien Ornguga and Mr. James Dwen after the nominees reportedly failed to provide satisfactory responses to petitions filed against their candidacies. The Assembly has called on Governor Alia to submit alternative nominees to fill the vacant positions.
Six nominees successfully secured confirmation from the state legislators:
– Hon. Theresa Odachi Ikwue
– Hon. Dr. Benjamin Ashaver
– Hon. Dr. Adamu Margaret Ijaguwa
– Hon. Dr. Peter Oboh Egbodo
– Hon. Denis Iyaighgba
– Dr. Paul Ejeh Ogwuche
According to a statement from the Assembly, the Speaker praised lawmakers for their thorough screening process and urged the newly confirmed commissioners to serve the people of Benue State with dedication.
The Assembly demonstrated its commitment to proper vetting by rejecting two of the nominees, showing its willingness to exercise oversight and respond to public concerns about executive appointments.

Recall that one of the nominees, Associate Professor Timothy Yangien Ornguga, faced opposition from his former students immediately after his nomination was announced. Over 300 Benue State University law alumni had petitioned for his removal from the list, arguing that “leadership should uplift, not traumatise.”
