During an emergency session on Thursday, lawmakers voted to stand down all pending commissioner confirmations while escalating a confrontation with the state’s executive branch. The assembly has demanded the immediate suspension of two key officials before it will resume normal legislative cooperation with the governor’s office.

The legislators are insisting that Governor Alia, a Catholic priest turned politician, must suspend the Chairman of the Benue State Universal Basic Education Board, Dr. Grace Adagba, and the Chairman of Otukpo Local Government Council, Hon. Maxwell Ogiri, along with unnamed others. The assembly claims these suspensions were previously directed but have not been implemented by the executive.
This move has escalated tensions between the legislative and executive arms of the Benue state government. By refusing to process commissioner nominations and cutting off official communication channels, the assembly has effectively created a governance impasse that could affect the state’s administrative functions.
The emergency session concluded with lawmakers adjourning until Tuesday, August 19, giving the governor’s office eleven days to comply with their demands. The extended adjournment suggests the assembly is prepared for a prolonged standoff if their conditions are not met.
Neither the governor’s office nor the affected officials have immediately responded to the assembly’s ultimatum. The standoff puts pressure on Governor Alia to choose between backing his appointees and maintaining functional relations with the state legislature needed to advance his administration’s agenda.
