Lawmakers passed a motion Wednesday to honour Joshua Obekpa, who recently achieved record-breaking success at the Nigerian Air Force Military School (AFMS) in Jos, emerging as the best graduate nationwide. The assembly also voted to recognise Francisca Ordega, who contributed to Nigeria’s victory at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) Morocco 2024.
The motion was introduced by Hon. Samuel Agada, representing Ogbadibo State Constituency, who argued that recognising these achievements would inspire younger generations to pursue excellence in academic and skills development. Agada noted that Obekpa’s performance at the Air Force Military School had brought pride to Benue State and warranted official recognition.
“By rewarding them, it will encourage the younger generation to put in their best in valuable endeavours such as academic and skills development and acquisition,” Agada explained during the session.
In a related development, the assembly urged Reverend Father Moses Orshio Adasu of the University of Makurdi (MOAUM) to grant Ushahemba Benedict, a first-class Law graduate from the University of Abuja and the Nigerian Law School, the right of first refusal.
During the same plenary session, lawmakers advanced legislation aimed at addressing professional malpractice in the state. The Benue State Agency Against Quackery Establishment Bill passed its second reading.
The bill, sponsored by Hon. Douglas Akya of Makurdi South constituency, seeks to establish a regulatory agency with the authority to investigate and prosecute instances of professional quackery throughout Benue State. Speaker Hyacinth Aondona Dajoh referred the legislation to the House Standing Committee on Health for detailed review and further legislative consideration.
The formal recognition ceremonies and specific details of the honours are expected to be announced following further deliberations by the assembly leadership.
