The caretaker chairman of Gwer West Local Government Area (LGA) in Benue State, Henry Agba, has imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew in response to violent clashes between rival cult gangs in Naka, the local government headquarters. The clashes have resulted in two deaths and several injuries.
According to a source who requested anonymity, the conflict began as a minor disagreement between two young men but escalated into a full-blown cult war.
“In the last three days, the situation has become tense. Gang members engaged in bloody street fights, killing two people and injuring several others. They also resorted to moving from house to house in search of rival gang members to attack, despite police intervention. The development created tension in the town, with business owners feeling very unsafe, and some even locking up their shops for fear of being attacked,” the source explained.
In response to the violence, Chairman Agba stated that the curfew was necessary to prevent further escalation.
“There was a clash between rival cultists in the local government during which two people from both sides were killed. As a result, the LGA became tense, so we had to place a night curfew to contain the situation. As of Wednesday, May 15, 2024, movement ceased from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., and at the moment, there is a restoration of peace and normalcy,” he said.
