Dr. Timothy Ornguga, nominated as commissioner-designate by the Benue State government, faces mounting resistance from his former students at BSU’s Faculty of Law. In a show of collective action, over 300 graduates from the Class of 2015 have signed a formal petition within 24 hours, challenging his fitness for the position.
The alumni coalition, armed with verified signatures, has raised serious concerns about Dr. Ornguga’s conduct during his tenure as their lecturer. The petitioners have cited what they characterise as “long-standing grievances and alleged misconduct” that occurred while they were under his academic supervision.
“The former students expressed disappointment over what they described as ‘awful experiences’ endured under Dr. Ornguga’s supervision,” according to Dr Terzungwe Kwagh-Aondo. The graduates argue that his nomination fails to meet “the moral and ethical standards expected in public office.”
The rapid mobilisation of the 2015 law graduates is an unusual case of students taking collective action against a former faculty member’s career advancement.
The speed at which signatures were gathered – over 300 in less than a day – suggests deep-seated concerns among the alumni about their former lecturer’s suitability for public service.
Dr. Ornguga has not yet responded publicly to the allegations contained in the petition. The Benue State government has also not issued any statement regarding the opposition to his nomination.
