The discovery occurred during a scheduled stop in Kaiweka, approximately 50 miles northwest of Auckland, when the InterCity bus driver noticed unusual movement coming from a piece of luggage after a passenger requested access to the compartment.
“The little girl was reported to be very hot but otherwise appeared physically unharmed,” said Detective Inspector Simon Harrison of the New Zealand police in an official statement released Monday. The child was immediately transported to a local hospital for a comprehensive medical evaluation.

Police arrested the 27-year-old woman at the scene and charged her with ill treatment or neglect of a child, an offence that carries a maximum sentence of 10 years imprisonment under New Zealand law. Authorities have not disclosed the relationship between the woman and the child, and Detective Inspector Harrison indicated that additional charges have not been ruled out.
The accused appeared before an Auckland district court on Monday, where a judge issued a suppression order preventing public disclosure of her identity. She did not enter a plea and was remanded in police custody pending a psychiatric evaluation. Her next court appearance is scheduled for Tuesday.
Detective Inspector Harrison praised the bus driver’s swift response, stating that his quick actions prevented “what could have been a far worse outcome.” The driver’s alertness to the suspicious movement likely saved the child from potentially fatal consequences in the confined space.
InterCity, New Zealand’s long-haul bus operator, acknowledged the incident in a company statement, confirming that “no one was physically harmed during the incident, and the service resumed” following the emergency response.
