A strategic one-day workshop focused on countering disinformation across West Africa was held in Lagos on Thursday, February 20, 2025, bringing together key regional leaders and experts in democracy and governance.
The event, organised jointly by the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD West Africa) and the ECOWAS Commission, aimed to strengthen democratic institutions and develop more effective strategies against misinformation and disinformation throughout the region.
Notable attendees included the Head of Democracy and Good Governance at the ECOWAS Commission, Mr. Ebenezer Asiedu, who represented Ambassador Abdel-Fatau Musah, the Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security. Acting Director of the ECOWAS Early Warning Directorate, Dr. Onyinye Onwuka, was also present alongside staff from the ECOWAS Communication Directorate.
The workshop featured contributions from distinguished academics and experts, including Professor Adiele Jinadu and Professor Jubrin Ibrahim, as well as representatives from the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs and CDD-West Africa.
The gathering focused on sharing insights and strengthening collaborative efforts to protect democratic institutions and communities across the region from the growing threat of disinformation.
