The African Centre for Leadership, Strategy and Development (Centre LSD) has launched a two-day workshop aimed at developing an Open Government Partnership (OGP) Local Action Plan for the Kwali Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). This initiative is part of the Centre’s ongoing project to enhance transparency and accountability in governance.
According to a press statement by the programme coordinator of Centre LSD, Mr. Lawal Amodu, the workshop, which began on July 24, 2024, is designed to produce a comprehensive two-year plan. This plan will guide the Kwali Area Council in implementing the OGP principles, ensuring clear steps and processes towards achieving the objectives of the partnership.

Mr. Amodu emphasised the importance of a detailed action plan for the successful adoption of open governance by the Area Council. The workshop gathers 22 participants, including top council officials and civil society members with expertise in OGP, to contribute to the development process.
The initiative follows a series of advocacy and orientation workshops that raised awareness among Kwali Area Council officials about the OGP. These efforts led to the council’s formal declaration of intent to join the partnership, which focuses on co-creation between local government actors and civil society to enhance development and service delivery.
Kwali Area Council joins AMAC and Gwagwalada as the third FCT Area Council to participate in the OGP in Nigeria. The partnership aims to make governance more open, transparent, accountable, and citizen-driven.
Centre LSD commended the council’s decision to join the global initiative, which operates on four key principles: transparency, accountability, citizen participation, technology and innovation.
The organisation encourages citizens to engage with the OGP project through its various social media channels, fostering a collaborative effort towards improved governance in the Kwali Area Council and beyond.
