A high-level virtual conference bringing together Nigeria’s thought leaders will be held tomorrow to address the country’s most pressing challenges, including widespread poverty, questions about electoral integrity, and diminishing civic freedoms. The African Centre for Leadership, Strategy & Development (Centre LSD) and the Women’s Rights Advancement and Protection Alternative (WRAPA) are organising the event with support from the MacArthur Foundation.

The conference comes at a critical time for Nigeria, where an estimated 133 million people—approximately 63% of the population—are experiencing multidimensional poverty, facing simultaneous deprivations in health, education, and living standards.
“This conference has become imperative, given the impact of these tripartite issues on the well-being of citizens,” said Mr. Itia Otabor, Director of Strategy at Centre LSD.
Lingering concerns about the credibility of the 2023 elections and growing restrictions on civic engagement have raised alarms about the future of democratic freedoms in Africa’s most populous nation. The virtual gathering aims to facilitate dialogue among stakeholders and policymakers to develop sustainable solutions to these interconnected challenges.
The conference will take place on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, at 10:00 AM (West Africa Time) via Zoom. Civil society organisations, government representatives, media outlets, and members of the public are invited to participate in this important discussion about Nigeria’s democratic and development trajectory.
