The Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID) has announced a new three-month fellowship programme focused on artificial intelligence (AI) and technology accountability reporting for Nigerian journalists.
The Storytelling AI and Tech Accountability Reporting Fellowship aims to equip media professionals with the necessary tools and expertise to investigate how AI and emerging technologies are impacting public life in Africa, addressing a significant gap in coverage of these rapidly evolving technologies on the continent.
Fellows will explore the ethical, economic, and social implications of AI across sectors, including healthcare, education, agriculture, and governance. The programme will specifically focus on critical issues such as algorithmic bias, surveillance, data privacy, automation, disinformation, and tech company influence on regulation.
The initiative comes at a time when AI is increasingly reshaping information ecosystems, governance structures, and economic systems worldwide, yet much of its influence and implementation in African contexts remain underreported and under-scrutinised.
The fellowship is open to journalists, researchers, and media professionals in Nigeria, particularly those with experience in technology reporting or an interest in AI ethics and digital policy. The organisation noted that female journalists and those with disabilities are especially encouraged to apply.
Selected participants will receive advanced training in AI journalism techniques, mentorship from AI experts and experienced investigative journalists, and funding to cover reporting expenses. Fellows are expected to produce in-depth articles and multimedia reports that will be published on CJID platforms and partner media organisations.
Applicants must submit a 500-word story pitch, a professional portfolio, a budget breakdown for reporting expenses, and a letter confirming where their work will be published. The application deadline is April 17, 2025.
