Costa Rican National Police confirmed to ABC News that Warner drowned off the coast near Cocles, a beach in Limon Province. The official cause of death was asphyxia after the actor was caught in a strong ocean current. His body was discovered Sunday afternoon.

Warner rose to fame as the only son of Bill Cosby’s character Heathcliff Huxtable on “The Cosby Show,” which aired from 1984 to 1992. His portrayal of the lovable teenager earned him an Emmy nomination and made him a household name across America.

Malcolm played the only son of the Huxtables, Theo, in “The Cosby Show.”

“I know I can speak for all the cast when I say The Cosby Show is something that we are all still very proud of,” Warner told PEOPLE in 2023. “We share a unique experience that keeps us lovingly bonded no matter how much time goes between seeing or hearing from each other.”

Following his breakout role, Warner continued building a successful television career. He starred alongside Eddie Griffin in the sitcom “Malcolm & Eddie” from 1996 to 2000, and later played Dr. Alex Reed on the BET series “Reed Between the Lines” opposite Tracee Ellis Ross from 2011 to 2015.

More recently, Warner appeared in major network dramas including “Major Crimes” as Chuck Cooper, “Suits” as Julius Rowe, and “The Resident” as AJ Austin, where he starred for five of the show’s six seasons.

Beyond acting, Warner was passionate about mental health advocacy within the Black community. In June 2024, he launched the podcast “Not All Hood” with co-hosts Weusi Baraka and Candace Kelley, describing it as a space where he could be his “most vulnerable.”

“When we talk about the Black community, we tend to speak of it as a monolith when the reality is there are so many different facets of the Black community,” Warner explained to PEOPLE at the time of the podcast’s launch.

Warner is survived by his wife and daughter, whose identities he kept private throughout his career.

The actor will be remembered for the warmth and humor he brought to television screens for decades, capturing hearts as a teenager on one of television’s most beloved family sitcoms.
