The Cross River State government has issued a strong warning in response to fears about a potential epidemic of viral hemorrhagic fever in the community of Old Ndebeji, which is part of the Akamkpa Local Administration Area.
The notice was issued on Saturday amid concerns about a health disaster looming over the region.
Viral hemorrhagic fever refers to a category of highly infectious disorders that alter blood coagulation abilities. Ebola and yellow fever are two notable instances of diseases that pose substantial public health risks.
Cross River State’s Commissioner for Health, Dr. Henry Ayuk, spoke to the press in Calabar, emphasising the gravity of the situation. He revealed that a potential index case was currently being investigated and receiving full medical care within the limits of the Ndebeji healthcare centre, away from the general population.
He also stated that he had directed the epidemiologist of the state and her staff to work with local health officials to obtain samples from suspected cases to do a comprehensive diagnostic. Furthermore, the healthcare facility will prioritise the implementation of efficient procedures for infection prevention and control.
”They will provide palliative case management and institutionalise adequate infection prevention and control in the facility.
”They will also work with community leaders to identify and restrict movements of known contacts until the sample results of the suspected index client are out and entrench risk communication in the community,” he explained.
“I must note that cases are most likely to present early with fever, rash, body weakness, bleeding from body openings, or may even be asymptomatic,” he further revealed.
Dr. Ayuk appealed to residents to avoid rodents and insect bites, adding that they should put on personal protective wear if they must come close to livestock, other animals, and zoos.
