The District Head of Akweya in the Akpa District of Otukpo Local Government Area, Benue State, HRH Pastor Wilson Ahola, has endorsed the Akweya Wrapper, also known as “Iya Akweya,” and is advocating for its proud adornment by all Akweya sons and daughters.
In a recent broadcast on AkweyaTV, while addressing resolutions from the National Conference of the Akpa Community Development Association (ACDA), the paramount ruler expressed his support for the traditional attire. This comes in response to suggestions that Akweya should abandon the Akweya wrapper in favour of the Idoma red and black attire to align more closely with the larger Idoma ethnic group.
HRH Pastor Wilson Ahola emphasised the importance of preserving Akweya’s cultural identity, stating that “nothing should deter Akweya from embracing and celebrating their uniqueness represented in the Akweya wrapper.” He added that “it stands as the most beautiful attire and is suitable for any occasion.”
In addition to promoting cultural heritage, the district head addressed concerns regarding the dual identity associated with the names “Akpa” and “Akweya.” He urged the Akweya community to educate others about their shared identity and let them know that Akpa and Akweya are the same people.
Other topics discussed included enhancing security measures, encouraging widespread participation in ACDA meetings among Akweya residents living in urban areas, and endorsing the establishment of an annual Akweya cultural day.
