A passionate advocate for social change, Mrs. Rose Amafu Aleje, has unveiled a programme titled “Don’t Kill My Dreams.” It is dedicated to combating the rising prevalence of teenage pregnancy within the Akweya community in Benue State. With a history of championing women’s and girls’ rights, Mrs. Aleje has set the stage for a transformative event scheduled for December 29, 2023, at the LGEA Primary School, Allan Akpa, Otukpo Local Government Area.

The initiative’s core objective is a mindset shift among teenagers, emphasising the pivotal role of education while empowering parents, educators, and community stakeholders to collectively address the pressing issue of teenage pregnancy.

The programme aims to eliminate or drastically reduce teenage pregnancy, striving for a brighter future for the youth. By fostering collaboration among parents, teachers, and the community at large, the initiative targets both the root causes and consequences of teenage pregnancy.

Unprotected sex, peer pressure, lack of information, and sexual abuse stand out as primary causes. The repercussions span from unprepared motherhood to the disruption of education. Addressing these factors is crucial for the holistic well-being of teenagers.

“Don’t Kill My Dreams” advocates for prevention through education and awareness. It advocates age-appropriate sex education, promoting abstinence, safe intercourse practices, and active participation in programmes promoting abstinence.

Mrs. Rose stressed the pivotal role of community support for the initiative’s success, stressing the need for investment in education, awareness, and skill acquisition to break the cycle of teenage pregnancy and secure a brighter future for youths.

In an exclusive telephone interview with AkweyaTV, Mrs. Aleje anticipates the attendance of at least 15 students from every school in Akweya, Akpa district, Otukpo Local Government, with invitations already dispatched to all schools.

The event is poised to host esteemed dignitaries, including HRH Pastor Wilson Ahola; District Head of Akweya, Isu Anyebe; Chief Friday Idah (former National President ACDA Abuja); Mr. Maurice Agor Adiga (National President Akpa Community Development Association ACDA Worldwide); Odoh Diego Okenyodo (MD Akweyatv Ltd); Ms. Blessing Ochife (National Chairlady ACDA); and the National President Adim Community Development Association, Mr. Eugene Oglegba.

Aside from the informative sessions, the event promises a blend of cultural experiences, including captivating cultural dances and the promotion of the Akweya wrapper. An awards ceremony celebrating outstanding teachers will also be a highlight of this anticipated initiative.
