The EBEDI International Writers Residency in Iseyin, Nigeria, recently concluded its four-week programme with a literary event at Iseyin District Grammar School (IDGS). The event, which drew attention to the dangers of substance abuse, featured a stage play titled “Sun Fades at Dawn.”
The performance depicted the tragic story of a bright young student who turns to alcohol and cannabis as an escape from his troubled home life, ultimately leading to his untimely death. The play served as a stark warning about the perils of substance abuse among youth.
Following the play, newly arrived Ebedi Fellow Abdulmalik Yahya reinforced the message with a talk on the negative effects of substance abuse, drawing examples from the performance.
The event also featured an open mic session, allowing students to share their creative talents. Attendees included students and teachers from various secondary schools in Iseyin, as well as community and traditional leaders such as Bale Awojobi and Bale Ogundiran.
In recognition of their performances, all actors in the play received certificates at the event’s conclusion.
Meanwhile, the September/October 2024 cohort of Ebedi Fellows includes MacDell Joshua Kofi Sackey (Ghana), Abdulmalik Yahya (Nigeria), Chukwuemeka Famous Chikemdi (Nigeria) and Immanuel Táiyéwò Fáwọlé (Nigeria)

During their four-week residency, these writers will work on individual projects while also mentoring secondary school students in Iseyin.
Established in 2010, the EBEDI International Writers Residency is a private initiative providing free facilities for writers to complete ongoing works. To date, it has hosted approximately 350 writers from 12 countries.
