The Executive Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Hon. Amadin Desmond Enabulele, has called on sports association chairmen across the state to align with Governor Monday Okpebholo’s “Catch Them Young” initiative as part of a strategic approach to sustainable sports development.
During a coordination meeting held on Tuesday with leaders of the state’s 32 sports associations, Enabulele emphasised long-term athlete development while also discussing preparations for the upcoming Ogun 2025 National Sports Festival.
“Team Edo is not under pressure to win but must focus on long-term development,” Enabulele stated, according to a release from his Media Officer, Mr. Edoko Wilson Edoko. “We need a sustainable ‘Catch Them Young’ plan that extends beyond the festival, in alignment with the vision of His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo.”
The meeting primarily focused on ensuring all 32 associations are adequately prepared for the National Sports Festival scheduled to take place in Ogun State. Enabulele requested comprehensive updates on each association’s readiness and announced that a screening exercise would soon be conducted involving chairmen, coaches, and secretaries.
This evaluation process aims to assess Team Edo’s competitive position ahead of the multi-sport event, which serves as Nigeria’s domestic Olympics.
Enabulele reassured association leaders of full governmental support for their programmes and initiatives.
“The commission has the full backing of the state government, led by Senator Okpebholo and Rt. Hon. Dennis Idahosa,” he stated. “I urge all chairmen to be steadfast in the administration of their associations. The commission is committed to transparency, accountability, and excellence.”
Several association chairmen provided updates on their activities and challenges during the coordination meeting. Chairman of the Edo State Golf Association, Mr. Andy Momodu, expressed appreciation for Enabulele’s leadership while noting merit-based selection processes.
“Sports must be driven by skill and merit rather than favouritism to ensure inclusive progress in athlete development,” Momodu remarked. He expressed confidence that Edo golf athletes would deliver strong performances at the upcoming festival.
