A recent report by the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID) reveals that social media has become the primary source of election information for voters in Edo State ahead of the 2024 gubernatorial election.
The study, authored by Amina Miango, a Nigerian-trained lawyer and chartered mediator, found that 50% of respondents rely on platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, and X (formerly Twitter) for election updates. This significantly outpaces traditional media outlets, which were preferred by only 22.8% of respondents.
Based on responses from over 2,100 citizens across Edo and Ondo states, the report highlights the growing influence of social media in Nigeria’s political landscape. It notes that these platforms enable candidates and political parties to engage voters directly through multimedia content.
However, the report also raises concerns about the spread of misinformation and disinformation on social media, emphasizing the need for enhanced media literacy among users.
“Transparency, integrity, and inclusivity must be at the forefront of Nigeria’s electoral process to restore trust in institutions,” Miango advocates in her conclusion.
The report reveals mixed perceptions of media coverage, with 57% of respondents rating election campaign reporting as fair, while 25% viewed it as biased.
Miango’s extensive background in election law and her work with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) informs the report’s recommendations. She calls for electoral stakeholders to adapt to this new digital landscape and emphasizes the importance of accurate and responsible media coverage.
The findings underscore the need for collaboration between media outlets, political parties, and civil society to ensure voters receive reliable information as the election approaches.
“Transparency, integrity, and inclusivity must be at the forefront of Nigeria’s electoral process to restore trust in institutions,” Miango advocates in her conclusion.
