At the continuation of the trial of the ex-CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele, on Thursday, March 7, 2024, a forensic document examiner, Bamaiyi Haruna, confirmed that the ex-CBN governor forged the signatures used to withdraw the sum of $6.2 million from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). Haruna is a witness to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
He confirmed this while standing as the sixth witness to the EFCC during the trial of the ex-CBN governor. He stated that the result is the result of an analysis conducted on the documents used to release the said amount from the Central Bank of Nigeria in February 2023.
He said the analysis of the disputed documents found evidence of forgery and copying, as the pen movement, form, and formation of the signatures and the skill of execution were different from the specimen signatures.
The matter was subsequently adjourned until March 11.
In another development, the Federal High Court, sitting in Abuja, adjourned the hearing of the ex-Anambra state governor, Willie Obiano, who, on a previous hearing date, challenged the jurisdiction of the court to hear the alleged four billion naira fraud charge brought against him by the EFCC.
Justice Inyang Ekwo adjourned proceedings to enable Obiano’s legal team to file a response to the EFCC’s reply to their motion challenging the court’s jurisdiction to hear the matter. The hearing was then adjourned to the 13th day of March 2024.
