The airport was temporarily closed last week after what FAAN described as “a sudden and significant rupture in the asphalt surface at a critical section of the runway.” The closure came just hours after Air Peace had suspended its operations at the facility due to safety concerns.

“Rehabilitation works on the runway have been completed, and the runway is cleared for landings and takeoffs by the engineers working with FAAN,” said Mrs. Obiageli Orah, FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, in a statement released Saturday.
This latest repair follows a series of previous rehabilitation efforts at the airport. In 2019, the Federal Government approved N10 billion for the extension and rehabilitation of the airport’s runway, with the contract awarded to PW Construction Company by then-Aviation Minister Hadi Sirika.
Prior to that, former Aviation Minister Princess Stella Oduah had overseen runway improvements and facility remodelling as part of a $500 million Chinese loan, after which the airport reopened in 2014.
The emergency repair work began on April 22 and was completed ahead of the Monday reopening date.
“FAAN appreciates all airport users and stakeholders for their understanding and cooperation during this time,” the statement continued. “The Authority sincerely apologises for the inconvenience but assures the public that all actions were taken in the interest of safety.”
