The Global Director-General of the International Human Rights Commission (IHRC), Dr. Tivlumun Ahure, has stated that Enugu State is ready to become the UN’s fourth headquarters. Dr. Ahure announced at the inaugural NGEducators International Model United Nations (NGIMUN) conference in Enugu, noting the state’s creative initiatives and major investments in education.
The conference, titled “The Development of Education in Developing Countries,” brought together attendees from 14 countries and numerous UN entities. Dr. Ahure, who also serves as the coordinator of NGMUN, stressed that Enugu’s strategic choice as the host city is due to its pioneering efforts in educational development under the current administration.
“I am overwhelmed with what Enugu State is doing. Everything we have seen about Enugu State has been so wonderful.
“The United Nations has three headquarters: one in New York, another in Vienna, and one in Geneva. We intend to have the fourth headquarters in Enugu State. If you like that, let me re-emphasise it because it is not a joke. In our lifetime, there is going to be a United Nations’ headquarters cited in Enugu State, Nigeria,” he stated.
The governor of Enugu State, Governor Peter Mbah, mentioned that he was shocked at the international recognition his administration and the state had received on a global scale. He also said that he had adopted a radical strategy for advancing education, allocating 33% of the state’s 2024 budget to this area because he believed it was still the most effective tool for battling poverty.
“My first reaction is that I have goosebumps all over me. We didn’t even know that our modest efforts in our education sector was already gaining such international attention and acclaim,” he said.
Governor Mbah added that they were honoured by the generous statements being made by the diplomats, the UN-affiliated bodies, and those who are focusing on education in developing countries.
