The Eugenia Abu/SEVHAGE International Prize for Creative Non-Fiction has been announced by the SEVHAGE Literary and Development Initiative and the ALINEA Initiative. The two organisations jointly fund and oversee this award, which aims to recognise outstanding creative non-fiction writing around the globe.

The Executive Director and President of SEVHAGE, Su’ur Su’eddie Vershima Agema, said that the award is named in honour of Eugenia Abu, a well-known writer, broadcaster, and media consultant.

Agema stated that the goal of the award is to honour and promote exceptional pieces of creative non-fiction that provide significant insights into the human condition while also challenging and inspiring readers, with support from the Senior Advisor to the President for Communication and Stakeholder Engagement at the African Development Bank Group, Dr. Victor Oladokun, as well as contributions from anonymous donors.
Agema emphasised that the Eugenia Abu/SEVHAGE International Prize for Creative Non-fiction is an important component of the SEVHAGE Literary Prizes 2024. This year’s honours include categories for fiction and critical essays.

He said Professor Hyginus Ekwuazi, a prominent multi-genre writer, scholar, and former Vice Chancellor of Dominican University in Ibadan, will be the competition’s top judge in 2024, ensuring that only the best entries are chosen.

The Eugenia Abu/SEVHAGE International Prize for Creative Non-fiction is currently accepting submissions, which will close on August 29, 2024, at 23:59 WAT. The competition is accessible to writers from all around the world, and participation is free.

“The competition is open to writers globally and is free to enter. The winner will receive a prize of N750,000 and have their work published, with additional opportunities for other shortlisted entries,” Mr. Agema said.

He added that “portions of their work will be featured in an exhibition in Nottingham, England, as part of the SEVHAGE Festival.”

For detailed submission guidelines, interested participants can visit the SEVHAGE website at www.sevhage.com/prizes.
