Resident doctors in Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory have given FCT Minister Nyesom Wike a 14-day ultimatum to clear salary arrears, address welfare concerns, or face service shutdown across Abuja hospitals.
Speaking at Wuse District Hospital on Monday, Association of Resident Doctors President Dr. George Ebong said, “Our demands are straightforward and pressing.” He highlighted their demands to include payment of six months’ salary arrears for doctors hired in 2023; disbursement of the 2024 Medical Residency Training Fund; reduction of bonding policy from six to two years; implementation of allowances, including skipping for 2023 intakes; payment of hazard allowance arrears; promotion of eligible doctors to consultant status; and healthcare worker recruitment to address staffing gaps.
While acknowledging Wike’s infrastructure development in Abuja, Ebong emphasised that mounting economic pressures have pushed doctors to consider industrial action as a last resort.
