Federal Government Declares September 5 Public Holiday for Eid-ul-Mawlid Celebration

The Federal Government has declared Friday, September 5, 2025, a public holiday to commemorate Eid-ul-Mawlid, marking the celebration of the birth of Prophet Muhammad.

Interior Minister Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo announced the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government in a statement released Tuesday by the Ministry of Interior. The minister extended felicitations to the Muslim community in Nigeria and worldwide on the religious occasion.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo called on Muslim faithful to reflect on the values exemplified by Prophet Muhammad, including peace, love, humility, tolerance, and compassion. He noted that these virtues remain essential for building a united, prosperous, and progressive Nigeria.

The minister encouraged all Nigerians, regardless of religious affiliation, to use the holiday as an opportunity for prayer focused on the country’s peace, security, and stability. He also urged citizens to support government efforts in promoting national harmony and sustainable development.

“The celebration of Eid-ul-Mawlid offers us yet another opportunity to strengthen the bonds of brotherhood, promote peaceful coexistence, and imbibe the Prophet’s teachings of mutual respect and selfless service to humanity,” Dr. Tunji-Ojo stated.

The Interior Minister called on citizens to remain law-abiding and security-conscious while supporting government policies aimed at ensuring collective well-being for all Nigerians.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo concluded the statement by wishing all Muslims a joyous and peaceful Eid-ul-Mawlid celebration.

The statement was signed by Dr. Magdalene Ajani, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior.
