The Federal Government has commenced disbursement of N44,000 minimum wage arrears to former members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), fulfilling a commitment made following the recent upward review of corps members’ monthly allowance.
The payment initiative addresses arrears owed to corps members who completed their service year before the new allowance structure took effect earlier this year. The monthly stipend for serving corps members was increased from N33,000 to N77,000 as part of the government’s broader minimum wage adjustment.
Former corps members across the country have begun receiving payment alerts, with many taking to the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to confirm receipt and express their appreciation. The online response has been overwhelmingly positive, with beneficiaries sharing screenshots of payment notifications and thanking government officials.
Social media users have described the payment as an unexpected but welcome relief. Many expressed gratitude to the NYSC management and President Bola Tinubu’s administration for honouring the commitment. Some users admitted they had nearly given up hope of receiving the arrears, with one noting they had almost deleted their NYSC account before the payment arrived.
The disbursement has generated significant excitement online, with recipients viewing it as evidence of improved government accountability and commitment to keeping promises made to citizens. The payment is seen as particularly significant given Nigeria’s current economic challenges and the government’s efforts to address youth welfare concerns.
The NYSC scheme, established in 1973, requires Nigerian graduates under 30 to serve for one year in states other than their place of origin or education, aimed at promoting national unity and development.
