Nigerian workers will enjoy an extended weekend as the Federal Government has announced Friday, June 6th and Monday, June 9th as public holidays to commemorate this year’s Eid-ul-Adha festival.
The announcement, made Monday by Interior Minister Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, provides Muslim faithful and all Nigerians with a four-day break when combined with the regular weekend, allowing for extended celebrations of one of Islam’s most significant religious observances.
Speaking on behalf of the Federal Government, Dr. Tunji-Ojo extended congratulations to Muslim communities both within Nigeria and across the diaspora as they prepare for the annual festival of sacrifice.

The Interior Minister noted the spiritual significance of the occasion, calling on Muslim faithful to “continue to imbibe the spirit of sacrifice and faith as exemplified by Prophet Ibrahim (Peace be upon Him)” while using the period for prayers dedicated to Nigeria’s peace and prosperity.
Beyond the religious observance, Dr. Tunji-Ojo linked the holiday declaration to the broader objectives of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, assuring Nigerians that ongoing “people-oriented reforms and initiatives” under the Renewed Hope Agenda are designed to restore the country’s trajectory toward progress.
The Minister issued a call for national unity, urging all Nigerians, regardless of religious affiliation, to “join hands with the present administration in its efforts to restore the glory of Nigeria as a great nation.”
Eid-ul-Adha, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to Allah’s command and is celebrated by Muslims worldwide through prayers, feasting, and acts of charity.
The declaration, signed by Permanent Secretary Dr. Magdalene Ajani, comes as Muslim communities across Nigeria prepare for the traditional practices associated with the festival, including special prayers, animal sacrifices, and sharing meals with family and those in need.
The extended holiday period is expected to facilitate increased travel as many Nigerians return to their hometowns for the celebration, while also providing opportunities for rest and spiritual reflection during this important religious observance.
