The Federal Government has made significant announcements aimed at honouring a national leader and supporting citizens during the upcoming holiday season. These include renaming the University of Abuja after former Head of State General Yakubu Gowon and providing free nationwide train service.
Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris revealed these decisions following the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The university will now be officially known as Yakubu Gowon University, Abuja, in recognition of the elder statesman’s substantial contributions to national stability. The minister noted that the Federal Government will formally communicate this change to the National Assembly.
In addition to the university renaming, the government has approved free train service nationwide from December 20 to January 6, 2025. This initiative is designed to help cushion the impact of high transportation fares during Christmas and New Year.
Idris also announced that cabinet members will begin recess on December 18 and return to work on January 6, 2025.
The renaming of the university serves as a tribute to General Gowon, who is said to have played a crucial role in maintaining Nigeria’s unity during and after the civil war, further cementing his legacy in the nation’s historical narrative.
