Arase served as Nigeria’s 18th Inspector-General of Police following his appointment in April 2015 by then-President Goodluck Jonathan. He retired from the position in 2016 after a distinguished career in law enforcement.
Before reaching the top police position, Arase built his reputation as an intelligence officer. He once headed the Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Bureau, the apex intelligence arm of the police force.
His career progression included serving as Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom State and later as Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of intelligence operations.
Arase’s experience extended beyond Nigeria’s borders through his service on a United Nations peacekeeping mission in Namibia, adding an international perspective to his law enforcement background.
Following his police retirement in 2016, Arase continued serving Nigeria in a civilian oversight capacity. In January 2023, President Muhammadu Buhari appointed him Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC).
However, his tenure at the PSC ended in June 2024 when President Bola Tinubu removed him from the role.
As of press time, neither Arase’s family nor the Nigeria Police Force has issued official confirmation of his death.
