The Coalition for Good Governance and Economic Justice in Africa (CGGEJA) has dismissed allegations questioning the qualifications of the newly appointed Executive Secretary of the Edo State Hospital Management Agency, stating that the appointee meets all legal requirements for the position.
In a statement released Wednesday, January 8, the Coalition’s Country Director, Mr. John Mayaki, clarified that the Edo State Hospital Management Agency Law 2023 does not mandate specific academic qualifications for the role, but rather emphasises proven integrity and extensive experience in health management.
“The law simply emphasises competence, expertise, and integrity, along with vast knowledge and experience in health management and related matters, which the newly appointed Executive Secretary possesses in abundance,” Mayaki stated.
The statement comes in response to social media posts challenging the appointee’s qualifications. According to Mayaki, while the law specifies detailed requirements for other board positions – including medical doctors, pharmacists, nurses, and laboratory scientists with minimum experience levels – the Executive Secretary position focuses on management capabilities rather than specific academic credentials.
The Coalition praised Governor Monday Okpebholo’s choice, describing it as a “meritorious” decision that demonstrates his commitment to improving healthcare delivery in Edo State.
“The current appointee was selected based on these criteria and not only meets the statutory requirements but also possesses the necessary expertise to drive the agency’s mandate,” Mayaki added.
The statement urged stakeholders to disregard the allegations and support the agency’s leadership in achieving its healthcare delivery objectives.
