In response to growing concerns over digital censorship and surveillance in Nigeria, a high-level stakeholders consultation on digital rights is scheduled for Thursday, October 31st, 2024. The event, aimed at safeguarding digital rights and addressing the shrinking civic space, will be held at the National Human Rights Commission in Abuja.
The World Impact Development Foundation (WIDEF), in collaboration with the National Human Rights Commission and Action Group on Free Civic Spaces, is organising this crucial gathering. The consultation seeks to bring together key players from various sectors to discuss and strategise on protecting digital freedoms in the country.
“This important event will bring together all key stakeholders to address the critical need for safeguarding digital rights in Nigeria,” a spokesperson for WIDEF stated. The organisation emphasises the timeliness of the consultation, given the current challenges posed by digital censorship and surveillance.
The event organisers have extended invitations to a diverse group of participants, including representatives from the public sector, private sector, civil society organisations, media outlets and the international community.
The consultation is scheduled to begin at 10:00 am at the National Human Rights Commission, located at No. 19 Aguyi Ironsi Street, Maitama, Abuja.
