House of Representatives Deputy Chief Whip Adewunmi Onanuga has died following a brief illness, the presidency announced Friday. She was 59.
Onanuga, who represented Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency of Ogun State, passed away on January 15. She previously served as Chairperson of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development in the ninth Assembly before her elevation to Deputy Chief Whip in the current Assembly.

In a statement through his spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, President Bola Tinubu described the late lawmaker as a passionate advocate for a better Nigeria and a role model for women in politics.
“She demonstrated that with hard work, integrity, and dedication to just causes, women can be effective leaders in politics,” Tinubu said, noting her continued service to her constituency until her death.
The president extended condolences to the Onanuga family, the government, and the people of Ogun State, particularly her constituents in Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency.
Popularly known as Ijaya, Onanuga was born in Hammersmith, London, to Nigerian parents. In 2019, she contested and won the elections as member, representing Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency in Ogun State, Nigeria, on the platform of the All Progressive Congress (APC). She was re-elected in 2023 for a second term.
