The National Association of Idoma Students (NAIS) has publicly opposed a recent tuition fee increase announced by Benue State University (BSU) in Makurdi, calling it an “unbearable financial burden” on students already struggling amid Nigeria’s economic challenges.
In a strongly-worded statement, NAIS President Comrade Okoh Emmanuel Oche criticised the university’s decision as “unfair and ill-timed,” warning that the additional costs could force many students to abandon their education entirely.
“The timing of this tuition fee increase is highly insensitive, given the current economic downturn affecting households across the country,” Oche stated. “Many students may be left with no choice but to drop out, jeopardising their future.”
The organisation has pledged to resist the implementation of the higher fees and is urging BSU management to reconsider its decision. NAIS is advocating dialogue and what it calls “a more student-friendly approach” to address the university’s financial challenges.
The Idoma student community has also expressed solidarity with BSU’s Students’ Union in rejecting the proposed increase. NAIS is now calling on the Benue State Government and other student organisations to support efforts to reverse the university’s decision.
