Japan has extended its multiple-entry visa duration for Chinese visitors from five to 10 years while doubling the maximum stay for tourist groups from 15 to 30 days. The move comes as part of a broader initiative that now grants visa-free access to travellers from 72 countries.
The policy shift follows China’s recent decision to allow Japanese citizens visa-free entry for up to 30 days, marking a significant step in bilateral tourism relations.
The expanded visa-free access list spans multiple continents, including major nations like the United States, United Kingdom, South Korea, and Brazil. European countries make up a significant portion of the list, with 37 nations from the region now enjoying streamlined entry to Japan.
The new arrangements emerged from recent diplomatic talks in Beijing, where both nations agreed to strengthen cultural and educational exchanges. The discussions also covered economic cooperation, including plans to resume Japanese beef and rice exports to China.
However, several challenges remain unresolved, including China’s ban on Japanese seafood imports following the Fukushima water release and ongoing discussions about espionage laws and territorial disputes.
Beyond tourism, both countries are exploring collaboration in emerging technologies and supply chain stability, signalling a broader effort to improve bilateral relations despite historical tensions.
