John Capodice, the veteran character actor who brought authenticity to countless mobster and police roles across four decades of television and film, died Monday at age 83. His presence as a reliable character actor helped define the look of American television from the 1980s through the 2000s.
Best known for his guest appearances on iconic shows like “Seinfeld,” “Law & Order,” and “Will & Grace,” Capodice built a career playing tough guys and working-class characters, accumulating over 150 acting credits. He remained active until 2024, with his final appearance in “Conversation with Mobster.”
The Chicago-born actor began his career in 1978 on the soap opera “Ryan’s Hope” before becoming a familiar face on television, appearing in series like “Moonlighting,” “Murphy Brown,” and “NYPD Blue.” His film work included roles in significant productions such as “Wall Street,” “Speed,” and “Independence Day.”
Beyond the screen, Capodice made his mark in Off-Broadway theatre productions and became recognisable to many as Fred in a memorable Polly-O String Cheese commercial.
Capodice, born on Christmas Day in 1941, is survived by his wife Jane, daughters Tessa De Pierro and Cassandra Hansen, and four grandchildren: David, Jake, Frankie, and Giuliana.
The cause of death has not been announced.
