Kano Governor Bans Student Labour After School Visit

Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has banned teachers from using students for manual labour after discovering students digging a toilet pipeline during an unannounced visit to the School for Arabic Studies.

According to a statement by his spokesperson, Sunusi Dawakin-Tofa, the governor was visibly upset upon finding students engaged in construction work. When confronted, the headmaster explained the work was assigned after school hours, but Yusuf immediately ordered the practice to stop.

“Schools are for education and moral guidance, not for manual labour,” the governor stated, emphasising that any school projects should be submitted to either the Ministry of Education or his office for proper execution.

During the visit, Yusuf promised to renovate all dilapidated buildings at the school, including its mosque. The governor later inspected ongoing reconstruction work at Kano Printing Press, which was damaged during the End-Bad-Governance protests. He instructed the contractor to strictly follow government standards, expressing concern about the quality of some structures.
