The “Discover Lagos State, A History Puzzle Book (Vol. 1)” represents a departure from traditional educational approaches, transforming archival materials into interactive learning experiences across 55 chapters covering Lagos culture, traditions, and significant events. The initiative emerged from concerns that younger generations lack sufficient knowledge about their heritage and identity.
Information and Strategy Commissioner Gbenga Omotoso noted the urgency behind the project during Tuesday’s public presentation organised by the Lagos State Records and Archives Bureau (LASRAB). “If we fail to evolve in the times, we risk losing our identity,” Omotoso warned, describing the book as essential for “repackaging heritage for the next generation in a language they understand and appreciate.”

The educational tool divides Lagos history into two distinct sections: foundational elements, including culture and traditions, followed by chronological documentation of major state events and timelines. Officials hope this structure will help students connect historical knowledge with contemporary Lagos development.
Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, representing Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu at the launch, positioned the puzzle book within broader efforts to create “truly informed generations of Lagosians” who understand their origins and cultural foundations. He described the project as combining education, creativity, and cultural preservation in unprecedented ways.
The state government credits former Governor Babatunde Fashola for establishing the foundation for such initiatives through LASRAB’s creation in 2008. Current officials view that institutional framework as crucial for “intentional efforts to institutionalise preservation, documentation, and dissemination of the Lagos narrative for posterity.”
Beyond immediate educational goals, the puzzle book launch revealed broader concerns about historical consciousness among Nigerian youth. Officials argued that understanding local heroes, struggles, and defining values remains essential for building informed citizenship and cultural pride.

The project seeks private sector partnerships to ensure distribution across all local government areas and council development areas throughout Lagos State. Administrators hope teachers, parents, and school officials will integrate the puzzle format into regular curricula to make historical learning more engaging for students.
State leaders framed the initiative as part of Lagos’s commitment to knowledge-based programmes that strengthen identity while promoting creativity. They stated that such educational tools serve as “bricks in the foundation” for building historical consciousness that both informs and entertains young learners.
