A teacher caught on video assaulting a three-year-old pupil has pleaded not guilty to charges of grievous bodily harm at the Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

Stella Nwadigbo, who teaches at Christ Mitot School in Ikorodu, was arraigned by the Lagos State Police Command on Thursday following the circulation of a video showing her repeatedly slapping a young student during a mathematics lesson.

According to prosecutor ASP Raji Akeem, the incident occurred on January 7 at the school premises. The video captured Nwadigbo striking the boy while attempting to teach him to write numbers.

The prosecution alleges that her actions violated Sections 135 and 172 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

Chief Magistrate O. Kushanu granted Nwadigbo, a resident of Isawo in Ikorodu, bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.

The case has been adjourned until February 18 for mention.

The school management had on Thursday condemned the incident as “deeply troubling” and announced Nwadigo’s indefinite suspension pending a thorough investigation.
