In a statement released today, the organisation stated the need for critical reflection on Nigeria’s democratic journey, acknowledging both achievements and shortcomings since the return to civilian rule.
“As Nigeria commemorates Democracy Day, it is imperative that we engage in honest reflection on our democratic progress – celebrating our successes while candidly addressing our failures,” the statement read.
The Law Hub Development and Advocacy Centre specifically called on all levels of government to prioritise the delivery of basic amenities and essential services that enable citizens to live with dignity and prosper within society.
“True democracy is measured not merely by the conduct of elections but by the extent to which democratic governance translates into improved living conditions for the people,” the organisation stated. “We call on the government to ensure that the benefits of democracy are felt by all citizens through the provision of basic amenities and everything necessary for citizens to live and thrive in society.”
The advocacy group noted that sustainable democracy requires more than political structures, arguing that consistent delivery of democratic dividends is essential for maintaining public confidence in democratic institutions.
“Only through the deliberate provision of essential services and infrastructure can we guarantee both a sustainable environment and a sustainable democracy for current and future generations of Nigerians,” the statement concluded.
The Law Hub Development and Advocacy Centre’s call comes as Nigeria continues to grapple with challenges, including infrastructure deficits, security concerns, and economic hardship, despite over two decades of uninterrupted democratic governance.
