In a demonstration of community intervention, the Law Hub Development and Advocacy Centre (Law Hub) brought critical awareness about Gender-Based Violence (GBV) to Kabusa Village on December 7, 2024, as part of the global 16 Days of Activism against gender-based violence campaign.
The comprehensive programme featured a targeted sensitisation workshop designed to equip community members with crucial knowledge about gender-based violence, followed by an immediate Law Hub Clinic offering pro bono legal services tailored to support and protect women.
District Head Samuel Kpowu set the tone for the event, warmly welcoming the initiative and urging women to approach the workshop with keen attention. “Listen carefully,” he advised the assembled community members, “so you can benefit from this sensitisation and know exactly what to do when confronted with gender-based violence.”
Among the participants, a woman known affectionately as Mama Ada offered a powerful perspective. “Gender-based violence will be significantly reduced if women can empower themselves by finding something constructive to do, no matter how small,” she advised. She expressed gratitude to Law Hub for organising an event she considered critically necessary for raising awareness about the multifaceted nature of gender-based violence.
The event was made possible through collaborative support from the Nigerian Women Trust Fund (NWTF) and Partners West Africa-Nigeria (PWAN). Notable attendees included representatives from the CLEEN Foundation and the FCT Police Command, the multi-stakeholder approach to addressing gender-based violence.
Law Hub’s intervention represents a targeted approach to community education, providing not just theoretical knowledge but practical legal support. By combining awareness-raising with immediate legal assistance, the organisation aims to create tangible pathways for women to understand, prevent, and address gender-based violence.
The Kabusa Village workshop highlights the critical role of localised, community-driven initiatives in combating gender-based violence. It demonstrates that meaningful change begins with education, awareness, and providing women with the tools and support necessary to protect themselves and their communities.
