The Law Hub Development and Advocacy Centre marked World Day of Social Justice yesterday by calling for increased efforts to bridge social gaps and promote inclusion across Nigeria. This year’s global theme, “Empowering Inclusion: Bridging Gaps for Social Justice,” highlights the urgent need to address systemic inequalities and create opportunities for marginalised groups.

Despite Nigeria’s abundant natural and human resources, the organisation noted that the country continues to face significant challenges in achieving social equality. These include gender-based discrimination, ethnic tensions, and a growing digital divide that leaves many citizens without access to essential technological resources.

“Social and economic inequalities particularly affect vulnerable groups, including women, children, persons with disabilities, internally displaced persons, and the poor,” said Joshua Dada, who outlined Law Hub’s comprehensive approach to addressing these challenges.

Some of the organisation’s work focuses on three main areas: criminal justice reform, human rights protection, and social justice advocacy. Their criminal justice initiatives include advocating for legislative reforms in twelve states and promoting prison decongestion. On the human rights front, Law Hub provides legal support to indigent persons and conducts community outreach programmes.

The organisation called for specific actions from stakeholders, including strengthening legal frameworks, investing in education and digital literacy, and promoting community engagement. They emphasised the importance of cross-sector collaboration between government agencies, civil society organisations, and media partners.

Law Hub also highlighted their ongoing efforts to address environmental justice, particularly in communities where vulnerable populations reside, and their work to expand social safety nets for Nigeria’s most disadvantaged citizens.

The organisation concluded by urging all Nigerians to join their campaign for social inclusion, noting that collective action is essential for creating a more equitable society.
