A public lecture on Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) brought together legal professionals and religious leaders at the Islamic Centre in Uwani, Enugu State, marking a significant step in addressing a critical social issue.
Chief Mobilisation Officer of WABMA Foundation and the event’s guest speaker, Barrister Nnena Anozie, delivered a powerful address highlighting the multifaceted nature of SGBV. She outlined the various forms of violence, including physical, sexual, and emotional abuse, as well as harmful traditional and religious practices.

Emphasising both the legal and social dimensions of the problem, Barrister Anozie stressed the importance of breaking the silence surrounding abuse. “When abuse is concealed, the perpetrator is empowered to continue their actions. Exposing the abuse is the first step to stopping the cycle of violence,” she told participants.
A key focus of the lecture was the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law (VAPPL), which provides a robust legal framework for addressing violence. To enhance understanding, simplified versions of the law in English and Igbo languages were distributed to attendees.
“The government has already enacted laws to protect victims and ensure justice,” Barrister Anozie explained. “If perpetrators are found guilty, they will face the full extent of the law.”
Religious perspectives added depth to the discussion, with an Islamic scholar affirming that violence contradicts fundamental religious principles. “It is not enough to simply identify as Muslim; one must uphold the true principles of Islam, which include treating all individuals with dignity and respect,” the religious leader stated.
The event highlighted a collaborative approach to combating SGBV, bringing legal expertise and religious leadership together to address a complex social challenge. WABMA Foundation, which organised the lecture, aims to amplify voices against gender-based violence and promote a more just and equitable society.
Participants were encouraged to speak out against abuse and support victims, with both legal experts and religious leaders reiterating the collective responsibility in addressing sexual and gender-based violence.
