Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his brother died in a car crash in northwestern Spain early Thursday when their Lamborghini veered off the road and burst into flames, according to Spanish authorities. The Portuguese sportsman’s 26-year-old brother, fellow pro soccer player, André Silva, also died in the accident.

The 28-year-old Portuguese international and his younger brother, André Silva, were both killed in the accident, which occurred in the province of Zamora around 12:30 a.m. local time.
The tragedy comes just days after Jota’s wedding, with reports indicating he married his wife, Rute, on June 22. The couple had three young children together.

Liverpool Football Club issued a statement saying it was “devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota” and requested privacy while making no further comment at this time.
Jota scored 65 goals in 182 appearances for Liverpool in all competitions after joining the club in 2020. Fans have begun laying flowers in his memory at the team’s Anfield stadium.
The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) confirmed the deaths and expressed devastation at the loss of both brothers.
André Silva, 25, was also a professional footballer who played for Portuguese second-tier club Penafiel after spending time in various youth academies.
Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo, who played alongside Jota, wrote on social media: “It doesn’t make sense. Just now we were together in the national team, you had just got married.”

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner Ronaldo sent his condolences to Jota’s family, wife and children, adding, “I know you will always be with them. Rest in Peace, Diogo e Andre. We will miss you.”
