An expert in Agricultural and Environmental Engineering, Professor Simon Irtwange, has raised concerns about the neglect of yam farmers within the Federal Government’s Anchors Borrowers Scheme, despite yams holding significant agricultural value.
Speaking at the sixth Mba’Apostoli Cultural Festival on April 27, 2024, held at Abuja’s Nelson Nuek Garden, Prof. Irtwange emphasised yam’s nutritional, cultural, and economic importance, urging the government to prioritise its production over other crops like ginger.
The event’s honorary figure, Hon. Silas Micikpah, examined its role in fostering unity among Middle Belt ethnic groups, stressing the need for greater participation in yam farming amidst rising food prices.
The organiser of the festival, Avese Asough, highlighted the event’s purpose in reviving communal ties amidst modern distractions, reiterating cultural preservation and integration.
The festival culminated in the official unveiling of the ‘Mba’Apostoli’ by the National President of the Akpa Community Development Association (ACDA), Mr. Maurice Agor Adiga, accompanied by various cultural performances, including the Akweya cultural troupe.
