The Federal Ministry of Health commemorated World Autism Awareness Day, which took place yesterday, April 2, 2024, by advocating inclusion.
In a recent post on its official X account, the ministry emphasised the need to uphold the rights of individuals on the autism spectrum.
“Joining hands with the global community to commemorate #WorldAutismAwarenessDay, we are committed to acknowledging the rights and fundamental freedoms of autistic individuals in their entirety, just as we do for everyone else,” the post read.
Recognised as an autism spectrum disorder, it encompasses a diverse range of developmental conditions affecting the brain. Despite affecting approximately 1 in 100 children, autism is often not diagnosed until later stages of life. The ministry highlighted the diversity in abilities and needs among autistic individuals, stressing that while some may thrive independently, others require lifelong care and support.
Condemning discrimination, stigma, and unfair treatment faced by autistic individuals, the ministry affirmed its stance against all forms of discrimination.
“We stand firmly against discrimination in accessing healthcare and reaffirm our unwavering commitment to fostering equality and inclusion within the health sector. Our objective is to enhance the overall quality of life for individuals on the autism spectrum,” the ministry stated.
